Westchester Residence
A plain, mid-century brick house located on a wooded lot in the Westchester, N.Y. is transformed and enlarged from a series of dark, small rooms into a modern home surprisingly filled with light, views, and unexpected spatial experiences. The renovated / expanded structure is to serve as a multi-generational family home.
The ordinary but pleasing single floor brick exterior has been used as a foil for a new double height d exterior which is inserted inside the shell of the remaining brick structure. Numerous small, multi-paned windows have been removed and enlarged to create light-catching windows and apertures that project out into the surrounding landscape and blur the distinction between the newly expanded living spaces within, and the somewhat wild landscape beyond.
A new entry courtyard also connects an existing garage structure- as a means of enhancing the house’s presence on the site- and in this manner a conventional, somewhat unclear entry walk has been refined into a layered and sequential entry path.
